In March 1954 FORD announced it's plan to launch the V8 powered Thunderbird. Chevrolet had not been able to catch the buyers' imaginations with the first generation design. The Thunderbird sharpened GM's resolve. Design work which had begun as early as 1952 for the new Corvette was completed along with plans for a powerful V8, optional manual gearbox, roll up windows and other functional improvements. When the Motorama staff debuted the 1956 Corvette, the public's reaction confirmed that Chevrolet had a winner. Designer Bob Cadaret is most credited with the front end of the new Corvette. Side coves were 'borrowed' from the 1955 Motorama design of Cadillac's LaSalle II Dream Car.
