by John Schinella
In 1963, even before production commenced on the new Corvette Sting Ray, Bill Mitchell gathered a group of his designers and tasked them with dreaming up the Sting Rays replacement. In 1964 John Schinella was one of the designers working in Chevy Studio #2.
This design is one of two renderings displayed within this single GM Asset, this one taken from the upper position and dated 10/64. This proposal is clearly the XP-830 which became the Mako Shark II, first displayed at the New York International Auto Show in April 1965. Of significant interest in this rendering are the two racing hydroplanes in the background, which perhaps indicate some of the inspiration for the sharply formed nose of the Mako Shark II.
