Race Design Proposal

Display Image

by John Schinella

In 1963, even before production commenced on the new Corvette Sting Ray, Bill Mitchell gathered a group of his designers and tasked them with dreaming up the Sting Rays replacement. In 1964 John Schinella was one of the designers working in Chevy Studio #2. Like many of Schinellas drawings, this one includes people; here the seated driver in race helmet is being talked to by another male while several people stand nearby. Interestingly, this proposal includes a mid-engine layout, which was highly desired by Zora Duntov and his engineering staff as well as Bill Mitchell and Frank Winchell, who was head of Chevrolet Engineering Centers R&D staff at the time.
